Introductions
So this is the second general update blog post that we are making at Soba House Game, and we just want to keep everyone informed of what’s going on and all the other little things that we are doing and working on that aren’t too personal. I can’t say too much about personal things; I just want to have my privacy on some matters, and I’m sure Cosmic would as well. To avoid problems, I’ll just say that we both have had some family stuff happen, and both of us are still working on things as best we can. Despite these small setbacks, we have been making progress as best as we can.
State of soba house
We both have been busy as just stated. Personally, I have been working more on some stuff you will see eventually. I’ll make a whole announcement and stuff for it on here too. It’s not quite where I want it yet, so I'm working on making things presentable for the new small project that hopefully goes well.
I (system) was working on a build of Violet Skies in RPG Maker, and I was a good chunk done for the demo, but I kept having problems and little things I personally don’t like. I’ll have that in the RPG Maker section. However, I do have a build of the game kind of working better in Unreal and spent a week on it. It’s not where I want it in terms of development functionality of things for the moment, but things are in progress.
For Trauma Team, it’s currently on a pause just because it’s wildly different from Violet Skies and Stowaway.
For Stowaway, I have a lot of ideas planned out and the story outlined to some extent. I still need names for places and characters and all, but I have an idea of the story, so we’ll have to see what all we want to do first after Violet Skies and how that one does too.
We do have ideas for other games, and for some of them, I (system) and Cosmic are the main developers on the project. Currently, all seems to be Unreal 5 because we both are more familiar with it, and it’s not too hard to learn and add things and find stuff on. We are looking at other options depending on the project.
Socials
So, I have been trying to post more often, but at the same time, I don’t want to fill it with trash and things that don’t matter too much. Also, I’ve been streaming games and stuff, generally just doing other things, chilling, and hanging out. Cosmic has also been trying to, but life and stuff. I’m going to try to be more active on them and share some ideas I have, but I’ll have to make time to doodle and stuff to post more.

Animations
So this is something I’m going to work more on as I make more time for myself to doodle and stuff, but I’m going to try to be more on top of doing animation for a while because it’s literally just the two of us at the moment, and if he can work on the story, I can do this and call that fair enough to an extent.
Drawings
I guess art technically, and not drawing like a giveaway, we have no plans on that. I do plan on drawing and sketching more as time goes on, as I can mix between real and digital art and all that, but I will have to keep up with that. You can find them on socials, and some may be inspired by songs for a project as a theme, but this doesn’t mean I’m going to add all of them to the projects. They might make it in some way, shape, or form. Drawing is something I want to get better at. Yeah, it's weird that I can animate but am not good at drawing—super weird, I know—but it’s what I have to fix. I'm working on it with little doodles and stuff for the moment, and that’s pretty much the best way: just mindless doodles, then think about how to improve them. It’s been working kind of well for me. Ignoring the 2, maybe 3 art streams I’ve done and things I’ve posted from them, I still consider them as doodles because they’re not great. I can do better, but I need to practice more on people and stuff, not so much buildings. That’s my current goal and area of improvement. I found out I’m awful at faces; it’s not going to be great, so I might see what I can do and go from there, or find a style that doesn’t require me to draw faces (like pixel art). So, I’m still working on that and doodles. Some I may color at some point, or they may just have color to help point out things as I go. I don’t know; it depends on how I feel when I do that, and we’ll see how that works out. Some may be in a physical pen and paper style or digital. I kind of like having the mix of both, oddly. I guess I know some like one or the other, so don’t shame me for having fun and enjoying the creative process. For all this learning, I think it’s important, and everyone has preferences and styles of learning, so please be kind. Critiques are accepted, but rudeness I’ll just ignore. I recommend people learning should also do the same to help keep that motivation going and creative juices flowing. You got this.
summer classes
Yeah, I’m in college. Okay, school first, work second, soba third, and safety is somewhere (I think I misplaced it, hold up). But in all seriousness, yeah, I had some, and I have regular classes currently, so homework is important. I need to do that first and then worry about other things. I hate having to set aside stuff like this that I enjoy so much, but I need skills to pay the bills, so that's probably a fair setback and all. It's just going to be a little bit longer to get some things done until fall classes.
fall classes
Well, that was fast. I didn't realize how quickly that was going to go, and then it was gone. I hope fall will not go as fast. In the first week of class, I also got a fair amount done, so that’s helpful. But still, same as before: school first, games second, and safety tenth or something.
rpgmaker mz
Originally, we were going to start with RPG Maker and stuff to make games and all that, but after struggling with it, I may not use it for a while. Most things are about adding this pack, and a handful of the time it doesn't work from my experience. It's a pain, and making 48x48 pixel art was not easy. It seemed like more work than I needed at the moment, and I didn't see an easy way of making things work. Most of the packs you have to pay for, which is fine—I get that—but $40 for a few things that aren't quite what I'm looking for at the moment is not ideal. I'm not saying it's overpriced, but I can't see it as reasonable for experimenting around with no guarantee that it's going to work like I'm wanting. I had problems with the free ones. Yeah, it's free and all, so I'm not expecting 10/10, but installing plug-ins was difficult. I'm saying it's not worth it for me, but if you like it, go for it. I can't stop you, but I can't recommend it personally.
unreal 5
So Unreal is one game engine I feel more comfortable with than RPG Maker, but maybe not Unity (they have their own problems too). It's still popular enough that I can get help and resources online as I encounter problems. It's fancy enough that I can create things the way I want and still have access to assets and tools for some elements of the games. I just don't want to have to buy everything like it was in RPG Maker, where everything was like 20-40 bucks a pop. I'm sure it's fine and all, but not what I'm looking for in an engine. With Unreal, I can make things and then save them as a template, so I have less work next time if I want to change things out and move things around. The organization is more like a regular file manager than an oddly specific data manager for some things. There are a lot of smaller things, like easier shadows and stuff, than I had with Unity, but it's also been some time since I messed with Unity and all its wonkiness. But Unreal is more like Unity in some setups, and also I don't technically have to code anything in Unreal with the Blueprints, so that helps me out a lot as well. It should help speed up the development time for stuff on our end and also should not be too bad in that way, assuming everything works out as well. I need to work more on the things that do matter, like the game being fun, but that's on me, not the engine. I guess a good example is like you're in an immaculate woodshop, and all you have to do is learn the tools to make whatever you want. That's the part we are in for some things, but also trying to get things that are our stuff before I ship a demo out because I want you to play our game, not an amalgamation of 40 other people's work that I claim as mine.
blogs
I honestly keep forgetting about blogs and stuff, and I want to use them to help people as I learn more things. I can’t copy the tutorials and other stuff I followed for some things because I watched a Udemy class or YouTube videos, but I’ll leave links to them, and I’ll keep working on things as I go. I don’t want to do things like "top 10 places I ate at last year," but as someone who's constantly on the move, I want to share good and helpful snacks that are healthy in case you find yourself at a convention and can’t cook. That's semi-realistic for a small game dev team. Maybe I'll include cool books that helped me with stuff and could help others. If I run out of books like that, then maybe other articles for things I'm studying that are video game-related. Things like that are what I'm going to have, some art, and if I find hotkey sites and posts for a program, I can help explain and break down the terminology for things that are a little confusing at first. That kind of stuff will also be another thing I work on as I learn more as well.
For the most part, I want to share knowledge and experiences with other people and help them through this maze called game dev life.
future plans
For the moment, expect a demo for Violet Skies first, and then the game at some point, and maybe a small game in between. Then possibly the Stowaway demo.
I have another currently secret project I'm working on, and I'll make a post about it here shortly. I need to wrap up the final details on things, then I can say a bit more about it. I'll have a new page on this site and stuff on Itch and stuff about it as well.
